What's unique about EpiCool?

Skin rejuvenation is one of the fastest growing treatment programs in the aesthetic laser market.  Physicians all over the world are coming up with their own techniques (or "settings") for maximum results with various devices. However, too often the basis for these techniques is not scientifically justified and the results are dependent upon external factors such as skin type, equipment used, age of the IPL heads, inconsistent locations of irradiation, and variations in the distance from skin during irradiation.

EpiCool's approach is based on controlling several aspects of treatment methodologies, such as the temperature of the epidermis, so that the settings can be maximized for treatment results rather than compromised by the side effects. The use of the EpiCool system as an integrated component of PhotoRejuvenation has allowed OptoGenesis™ to develop a treatment program for use with either the EpiLight or VascuLight HR. This treatment program includes specific settings for skin types up to V and provides the greatest skin rejuvenation results while effectively eliminating side effects.

 

How does EpiCool work in comparison to the IPL® Quantum SR?

The IPL Quantum SR uses an 8x34 crystal and a built-in thermoelectric cooling device with a quartz interface and a two-second pulse. While the built-in cooling device is more ergonomically satisfactory, with a quartz crystal the temperature can be up to 8 degrees C hotter at the center of the interface than at the edge.  The short 2-second irradiation also does not allow epidermis sufficient time to be cooled properly for high-energy light delivery.  Consequently, practitioners should be careful with higher energies to minimize the possibility of burning the patient. 

The EpiCool Desktop provides a handle that attaches to the ESC handpiece that includes a epi-adapter that fits over the end of the crystal.  This cryojacket uses a sapphire interface, one of the most highly heat-conductive materials available. When coupled with EpiCool's microcomputer interface, the EpiCool can control the temperature of the epidermis within +/-1 degrees C. Likewise, with the 10x45 crystal, the practitioner can actually cover a greater area in less time than an IPL-Quantum SR, in spite of the three-second-pulse interval.
